DR Sound Words
The DR blend joins the D and R sounds into one smooth cluster, with no extra vowel slipped in between.
Age of acquisition. R blends are later-developing, often between ages 5 and 7, because the R sound they contain is itself a late sound. Norms vary between children and between sources, so treat this as a rough guide, not a deadline. If you have concerns, an SLP can assess.
How to make it. Say the D and R sounds one right after another and blend them together, keeping them tight so no "uh" sneaks into the middle. A common early pattern is dropping a sound (saying 'dive' for 'drive').

How to practice the DR sound at home
- Start at the word level, then move to short phrases and sentences once the DR sound is easy on its own.
- Practice in short, frequent bursts. Five focused minutes a day beats one long weekly session.
- Model it first: say the word slowly, stretch the DR sound so your child can hear it, then have them copy you.
- Use the picture cards to keep it playful, and praise good tries, not just perfect ones.
